Serena is currently the Universal Screening Clerk for the St. Vrain Valley School District’s Early Childhood Department. Her work includes facilitating the screening of all new preschool students to the district. In addition to performing the initial screening for all Child Find Part B, she also makes contact with every family applying for the Colorado Preschool Program or Scholarship. During this contact with families she verifies qualifiers, inquires about school preference and at times provides families in distress with community resources. Integral to this role is building relationships and ensuring that the transition for families into district preschools is one that is without discomfort and guarantees equity and inclusion. Her hope is to expand the developmental screening to include ACE’s (Adverse Childhood Experiences). Serena has 12 years of experience teaching preschool and four years teaching elementary school. Serena’s prior experience includes drug and alcohol prevention education in Berkeley, California, advocating and assisting victims of domestic violence at the Southern Alameda County Domestic Violence Law Project, and teaching a court mandated first offender Driving Under the Influence class for the city of Berkeley.
