Kath Courter has dedicated her life’s work and purpose to serving young children and their families. She is a visionary leader, team builder, collaborator, and inspirational change-agent with years of experience in administration, curriculum development, and classroom teaching. Kath is a team player with relentless drive, perseverance, a fun sense of humor, and a contagious can-do attitude that makes her a valued and respected member of any professional organization.
Kath was a classroom teacher for 14 years - working with children preschool through third grade. She moved into educational leadership in 2007 and has skillfully woven her teaching background and leadership skills to create dynamic learning environments that welcome and support children, families, and educators.
While living and teaching in Germany, she led her colleagues in the creation of a program that was chosen as the “first choice site” - a model for all other Department of Defense preschools in the United States and Europe. After leaving Germany, Kath worked at Boulder Journey School (BJS), in Boulder, Colorado. While at BJS, Kath served as a mentor teacher and school environment coordinator. In this role, she worked in collaboration with colleagues as they deepened their understanding of the “why” behind quality early learning experiences and classroom environments.
In her current role as Head of Preschool, Extended Day and Summer Programs, Kath is a member of the administrative leadership team at Boulder Country Day (BCD). In addition to her primary leadership responsibilities, Kath has also served as BCD’s curriculum coordinator and as BCD’s COVID coordinator. During her tenure at BCD, Kath has been a consistent contributor and has played an integral role in the creation of the school’s learning community.
She has actively served on several non-profit boards, including Eldora Ski Resort’s Ignite Program for people with disabilities, WOW! Children’s Museum, and the Boulder chapter of the Colorado Association for the Education of Young Children. In addition, she shares her time, energy, and expertise with other schools while helping them live more fully into their missions, aspirations, and goals.
Kath’s educational background includes a B.A.S in Community Health and a M.Ed in Early Childhood Education. She was selected as a leadership fellow in the 2014-2015 National Association of Independent School’s Aspiring Heads Fellowship Program and the 2021-2022 Buell Early Childhood Leadership Program. Kath has presented at education conferences in both Germany and the United States.
When Kath is not at work, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her hobbies include running, skiing, hiking, cooking, reading, and gardening. Kath is a seasoned traveler who speaks semi-fluent German. She lived in Germany for nine years and she has traveled throughout Europe, Eastern and Southern Africa, and Vietnam.
